- Francis Faye Lee, son of Frank and Euretha (Jones) Lee, was born on November 28, 1912, in Section 6 of Charter Oak Township. His father was born in Rising Sun, Indiana, and his mother was a native of Ute, Iowa. Francis is the fourth child of six brothers and three sisters. A brother, Veyrl, and a sister, Jane, have passed away. Francis attended the Mapleton, Castana, and Ute Schools. He recalls riding the first horse drawn school bus in the area where they needed warming stones to keep their feet from freezing. He farmed in the Castana and Ute area before moving south of Charter Oak in 1943. He remembers the many different ways of farming and the machinery from the smallest to the much larger, like the modern type of today. In the Fall of 1961, he entered the Crawford County plowing contest at Dow City. The following several years, he went to State plowing contests. Some of the places were Vin- ton, Marshalltown, Living History Farm, Guthrie Center, and Jefferson. The contests were held in very different types of soil. In 1966, he received the W.H.O. Award for the safest equipment. Clarence Kortman of the Charter Oak Implement Store always hauled the plow and tractor. On June 11, 1955, Francis was united in marriage to Irene Kutschinski at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, by Rev. Nieting of Ute, Iowa. Irene was born in Section 15, Charter Oak Township, on October 14, 1919, to Carl Kutschinski and Louise (Jahn) Kutschinski. She attended St. John's Parochial School and later received a G.E.D. certificate. Francis and Irene farmed south of town until purchasing the late Herman and Marie Schultz farm in Section 6 of Paradise Township in December of 1958. They moved there on February 22, 1960. In June of 1982, they moved into town. They continued to farm. Francis is a member of the Community Club and Silver Spur Saddle Club. In February of 1986, the Stars program in Sioux City advertised for a gentle, well- trained riding horse for the handicapped to ride and enjoy. He then sold Custus to the club. They have been shown on television stations in Sioux City, Iowa. Irene is a member and historian of Clubettes, a charter member and historian of the Historical Huber House, a member of the Fundraising Committee for the Centennial, and secretary for the History Book Committee. She also belongs to Ladies Choir and is a newspaper correspondent. Times to remember are the hot and dry summers of 1934 and 1936, the severe cold winters and deep snow drifts of 1935 and 1936, and the feeding of poisoned bran to kill the grasshoppers in 1930. On January 8, 1961, a son, Bruce Karlton, was born at the Denison Hospital. Bruce attended the Charter Oak-Ute Schools, graduating in 1979. Besides farming and breaking and training horses, he was active in Boy Scouts, a member of the Friendly Willows 4-H Club, a member of The Trail Dusters Clubs, and an FFA member (with Alan O'Neal as an excellent teacher). Bruce received the Chapter Farmer award in 1979. He participated in local shows as well as AK-SAR-BEN in Omaha, Nebraska. Bruce in FFA Show at State Fair (1978) In 1979, he took his colt to the State Fair and received First Place. Later, in November, he went to the Royal Show in Kansas City, Missouri. On May 28, 1982, Bruce married Cherri Kunze at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. She is the daughter of Otto and Jane Kunze. Cherri attended Parochial and Charter Oak-Ute Schools, graduating in 1982. She was a Girl Scout and 4-H member. Bruce and Cherri farmed three years near Battle Creek. Then they moved to the Lee farm and Bruce worked three years at Denco Farms at Schleswig. He worked for two years at Henningsen Farm Supply in Denison, farmed 80 acres, and did other farm related work. He is presently employed at Charter Oak Ag Supply. Cherri teaches Sunday School and is employed at the Oak's Drive Inn at Charter Oak. They have three children: Brandi Jane, born Novem- ber 13, 1983, is in kindergarten at Charter Oak-Ute School; Brooke Ann, born April 9, 1985, attends Noah's Ark Preschool in Charter Oak; and Brady Bruce, born December 9, 1987. Irene Wilhelmina Lee was born October 14, 1919, the daughter of Carl and Louisa Jahn Kutschinski. She died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety.
Irene was born in Charter Oak, Iowa. She attended St. John's Parochial School and later received a G.E.D. On June 11, 1955, Irene was united in marriage to Francis (Red) Lee at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak The couple farmed south of town until purchasing the Herman and Marie Schultz farm in Paradise Township in 1958. They were blessed with the birth of one son, Bruce. In 1984 they moved to Charter Oak but continued to farm until retiring in 2003.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed telling stories about her grandchildren. She was a caregiver for her parents and was always taking care of others. She enjoyed a variety of activities including cooking and baking, sewing, and gardening, both flowers and vegetables. Irises were her favorite flowers. She would often enter flowers, vegetables and pies at the county fair. In 2004 she moved to Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, and then to Eventide Lutheran Home.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis in 2005; four brothers: Ernest, in infancy, Alvin, Elmer and Art Kutschinski; two sisters: Erna Friedrichs and Olinda Schultz. Survivors include one son, Bruce and his wife, Cherri; four grandchildren: Brandi and her husband, Jason; Brooke and her husband, Justin; Brady and Brittany; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at10:30 A.M., Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the service and graveside rites held at the St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Organist Art Beeck provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Rock of Ages," "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," and "Abide With Me." A prayer service was held at 6:30 P.M., Thursday, April 15, 2010, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers were Brooke French , Brandi French, Justin French, Brittany Lee, Jason French and Brady Lee. Serving as pallbearers were Delbert Lafrentz , Kreg Schultz, Kyle Schultz, Earl Schultz, Dwayne Lee, and Lowell Lee. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
