The U.S. Census of 1940, Chicago, Illinois shows the family at 5836 Iowa Street composed of Edward Gehrke, age 42, laborer at U.S. Post Office; wife Elsie, age 41; son Edward, age 16; and daughter Arlene, age 7. Edward's draft registration is dated April 27, 1942 and gives the same address, as well as his birthdate April 11, 1896.Elsie and both of her siblings moved from Illinois to California, following their children to California. Edgar and Freda Swanson and Hersch and Dorothy Westcott visited Freda's cousins Elsie and Lilly in Compton, California as part of their trip to celebrate Edgar and Freda's 50th wedding anniversary. Elsie and Lilly were both widowed and living together at that time. The California Death Index lists the death of Elsie Gehrke, born June 16, 1898 in Illinois, died March 25, 1985 in Ventura, California, mother's maiden name: Heinz, father's surname: Schmidt.
