?b?Obituary from the St. Charles Chronicle, September 16, 1927:?/b?

    Mrs. Bertha Exner.

Mrs. Bertha Exner was born in Pest, Germany, November 23, 1859, and passed away, after a lingering illness, at St. Charles, Illinois, September 10, 1927, having attained to the age of 67 years, 9 months, and 18 days.

She was married to Mr. William Schmidt in Germany in 1880. The husband died after a few years, leaving her to care for, and to bring up five minor children. In 1894 she was married to Mr. Frank Exner of Chicago. Mr. Exner passed away many years ago.

Mrs. Exner came to America in 1882. She came to Chicago and lived there till 1906 when she came to St. Charles. Since 1906 she has lived in St. Charles, always proving herself to be a desired addition to the membership of this town.

Mrs. Exner was a member of the Lutheran Church, Chicago. She was a fine Christian character.

Her life was a blessing to others, especially to those who were near and dear to her. Earlier in life she had many hardships to encounter, but, ever hopeful and optimistic, she overcame them all. Becoming a widow when the children were small, threw grave responsibilities upon her. She never spared herself in order that her dear ones might have everything necessary for their well-being. She lived to reap the pleasant reward for her efforts. She was a true, loving, and devoted mother, a faithful friend, and a valuable member of the community in which she lived.

Her illness, which was quite prolonged, was accompanied with intense pain. Everything that could be done was done for her. The most tender care was given her by her children. Her passing was peaceful.

Those left to mourn her departure are the following children: Mrs. Anna Wall of Chicago, Mrs. Ida Klug of Chicago, Herman Schmidt, William Schmidt, Mrs. Clara Nelson, Mrs. Martha Borman, and Miss Edna Exner of St. Charles; eleven grandchildren, an aged mother, Mrs. Augusta Heinz of St. Charles, two sisters, Mrs. Edward Nagle of St. Charles, and Mrs. Ida Schmidt of Chicago; two brothers, Otto Heinz of St. Charles and Emil Heinz of California; other relatives and a large number of friends.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, 1 o'clock, from the home 1028 Ash Street. Mr. Clifford Johnson sand two beautiful selections, an Rev. Eckstrom, of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, preached the sermon. Interment was in Concordia Cemetery, Forest Park.

    Notes:

Ida was called "Tante Ida" (pronounced Eda) by the Nagel children. The Schmidt family lived in Chicago but came frequently to visit the relatives in St. Charles, so that Freda and Dora Nagel were close to their cousins Elsie and Lily. Elsie, Lily, and Dora would holler (flirtatiously) at the boys; Freda was embarrassed by this, so the others called her a sourpuss. Uncle Emil Heinz also thought they were too wild with their flirting.

The U.S. Census of 1910, Chicago, Illinois shows the family living at 2016 23rd Street composed of Herman Schmidt, age 50, married 27 years, came to the United States in 1878, a naturalized citizen, a teamster for a lumber company; his wife Ida, age 48, mother of 10 children, 7 living, came to the United States in 1880; son George, age 23, also a teamster for a lumber company; daughter Olga, age 14; daughter Elsie, age 11; daughter Lilly, age 9; daughter Laura, age 6; and son Alfred, age 4/12.

The U.S. Census of 1930, Chicago, Illinois shows the family living 330 W. Cullerton Street composed of Edward Gehrke, age 34, age 27 at first marriage, born in Illinois, parents born in Germany, laborer at odd jobs; his wife Elsie, age 31, age 24 at first marriage; son Edward Jr., aged 6 9/12, born in Illinois; mother-in-law Ida Schmidt, age 67, widowed, born in Germany, came to the United States in 1880, naturalized; brother-in-law Alfred Schmidt, age 20, born in Illinois, a shoe salesman; sister-in-law Loretta, age 25, born in Illinois, doing general office work in the telephone apparatus industry.

Ida's birthdate is shown as December 14, 1864 in the Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947. However, her the Stolper Heimatkreise Globalindex shows her birth in 1861 to parents Heinrich Heinz and Auguste Burow. Her residence at time of death shown on her death certificate was 2521 North Tripp Avenue, Chicago. The informant for her death certificate was Lillian Hansen, of the same address, presumably her daughter Lily.

Ida married Herman Schmidt 16 Sep 1883, Cook, Illinois, USA. Herman was born 14 Dec 1859, Lauenburg, Pommern; died 12 Mar 1927, Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA; was buried 15 Mar 1927, Concordia Cemetery, Forest Park, Cook, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet]

    ?b?Census Records?/b?

The 1910 census shows Emil A. Heinz, 33, married to present wife for 2 years, living on Pleasant Street, St. Charles, Illinois, treasurer of a manufacturing company; his wife Martha, 26, born in Illinois, her parents from Germany; son Herbert 1 7/12; and mother Augusta, 69, widowed.

The 1920 census shows Emil A. Heinz, 38, widowed, living on Pleasant Street, St. Charles, Illinois, with his mother Agusta A, 79, widowed, and his son Herbert 11. Emil's occupation is listed as "runs business" at a glass factory.

The 1930 census shows a very unusual family of 5 people living at 1901 Adeline Street in Oakland, California:

Jennings, Albert, head, age 56, born in England, both parents born in England
_______, Mamie, wife, age 65, born in England, both parents born in England
Heinz, Emil, father, age 70, widowed, born in Germany, employed as cutter of gloves
_____, Herbert, brother-in-law, age 22, born in Germany, parents born in Germany
_____, Otto, son, age 25, born in Germany, parents born in Germany
(The census-taker and the provider of information were obviously both very confused, but this is definitely our Emil and Herbert Heinz.)

The 1940 census shows Emil A. Heinz, 59, widowed, born in Germany, living at 1031 Bella Vista Avenue, Oakland, California. His occupation is listed as "foreman" in a "china and glass studio". Also living nearby in Oakland, at 2221 Park Blvd, were Herbert C. Heinz, age 31, born in Illinois, "artist" in a "china and glass co", and his wife Olive G. Heinz, age 30, born in California, house-wife. All of these lived in the same place in 1935.

    Notes:

Bill Divine was born on the family farm at LaFox, Illinois. As a little boy, he was called "Billy Jay", but later became "William John", or "Bill" for short. He attended the LaFox School through the sixth grade. LaFox School went up through the eighth grade, but Clyde transferred the younger children, Bill, Lyla, and Ramon, from LaFox School to Wasco School in 1935 because he was angry with the LaFox School Director, Charles Keslinger. So Bill went to Wasco School for 7th and 8th grade. There were 14 in his class in Wasco, many of whom became lifelong friends, including Jay Johnsen, Bud Wynthein, Norm Skala, and Bob Jay. For high school, the Divine children returned to their own district and attended Geneva High School where Bill graduated in 1941. He was a member of both the wrestling and track teams, his specialty being discus-throwing.

At the age of 16, Bill witnessed the death of his younger brother in a tragic accident. This event was very traumatic for him and the entire family. Bill was always especially careful about accidents around machinery and horses after that time.

Bill and his siblings had a pony named Babe throughout their entire childhood, as Babe lived to be 23 years old. Of course, they also had teams of horses on the farm, since Clyde did not buy his first tractor until 1939. As an adult, Bill always had one or more horses around the farm, though he rarely had time to ride them. At the time of his stroke, he had 10 horses on the farm.

After high school, Bill worked with his father Clyde on the family farm, and also took on other odd jobs with his friend Jay Johnsen, including re-setting the pins at the bowling alley, and unloading coal trucks by hand. He and Jay also played on the LaFox baseball team before they were married. The team also included Verne and Ray Cox and John Bartelt.

Bill and his brother-in-law Jay Johnsen began farming together in Campton Hills at the time of their marriages in 1946. They rented Miss Rachel Beith's farm on shares. The Divines stayed on at the Beith farm until 1950 when they rented a dairy farm at Bald Mound, south of LaFox, from the Baker sisters.

In the early 1950's, they purchased the "South Farm" from Bill's father Clyde and his Aunt Irma, who had inherited it from their father. The farm was called the South Farm because Clyde had operated it for many years, and it was to the south of Clyde's farm, on Keslinger Road just east of LaFox. The house on the South Farm had deteriorated greatly from the time when the Bill's grandparents had lived there, and Bill was not ready to give up the rental of the Baker farm, so the family never moved to the South Farm. Instead, they rented the house to the Drury family, and later to the Forth family, for the price of $30 per month. The farm consisted of 104 acres, with 80 acres being the original farm on the south side of Keslinger Road, and the other 24 acres, referred to as "the Bentley Land", another mile east, lying on the north side of the road. The Bentley Land was so called because Bill's maternal great-grandfather Levi Brundige and his paternal grandfather Will Divine had convinced Arnold Bentley to split up his farm into three parts, the southwestern 24 acres being purchased by Will Divine and the 100 acres north of the railroad being purchased by Brundige on behalf of his son Levi Brundige, Jr.

After Bill's mother Bessie died in 1962, Clyde moved to St. Charles with his daughters Merilyn and Lois. Bill Divine and family then gave up the Baker farm, sold the dairy cows, and moved to Clyde's farm at LaFox on the last day of 1962. Bill later bought a small herd of Angus beef cows which he continued with until the time of his stroke. In the early 1960's, Bill and Marilyn sold the original 80 acres of the South Farm to National Electronics. National Electronics, later known as Richardson Electronics, built their factory on the portion of the property along Keslinger Road, while the Divines rented back the southern 67 acres of farmland until 1978. The Divines later purchased the 100-acre farm formerly owned by Levi Brundige, Jr, from Fred and Ruth Abrahamson. Once again, they did not live on the farm that they owned, because by that time, they were living in the house where Bill was born and they had no reason to move. In the early 1970's, they sold the Abrahamson farm to a speculator, Jim Murray, but rented back the land until 1978.

In 1978, they moved to Echo Valley Ranch north of Lancaster, Wisconsin, which they had purchased in 1973. For the first time in their marriage, they lived in a home that they owned. Two years later, they purchased a home in the town of Lancaster where they lived for two years before returning to the farm. During this time, Bill continued to operate the farm and the farmhouse stood empty.

On August 31, 1990, Bill suffered a massive stroke which left him severely incapacitated. He lost his sight and his short-term memory for the remainder of his life, though he did recover his speech. In 1991, Marilyn bought a house on Jefferson Street in Lancaster and moved there with Bill.
