    The U.S. Census of 1940, Chicago, Illinois shows the family at 5836 Iowa Street composed of Edward Gehrke, age 42, laborer at U.S. Post Office; wife Elsie, age 41; son Edward, age 16; and daughter Arlene, age 7.

    Edward's draft registration is dated April 27, 1942 and gives the same address, as well as his birthdate April 11, 1896.Elsie and both of her siblings moved from Illinois to California, following their children to California.

    Edgar and Freda Swanson and Hersch and Dorothy Westcott visited Freda's cousins Elsie and Lilly in Compton, California as part of their trip to celebrate Edgar and Freda's 50th wedding anniversary. Elsie and Lilly were both widowed and living together at that time.

    The California Death Index lists the death of Elsie Gehrke, born June 16, 1898 in Illinois, died March 25, 1985 in Ventura, California, mother's maiden name: Heinz, father's surname: Schmidt. The Social Security Death index shows the same event, but also gives her last residence as: 90262 Lynwood, Los Angeles, California, USA. Findagrave.com shows her burial at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.

    The U.S. census of 1930 shows the Hansen family living at 4213 W. Cullerton St. in Chicago, consisting of Ralph, age 29, born in Chicago, his parents born in Norway; his wife Lillian, age 29, born in Chicago, her parents born in Germay; and their children Lois, age 2, and Ronald, age 10/12. Ralph was employed as a collector for a bakery. This Lillian Hansen is presumably the daughter of Herman and Ida (Heinz) Schmidt, since Lillian Hansen signed Ida Schmidt's death certificate in 1930, and lived about a block away in 1930.

    The census of 1940 shows the same family living at 2539 Tripp Avenue in Chicago, with Ralph employed as a "beer coil cleaner" in the tavern industry.

    Ralph Hansen's naturalization record is dated September 27, 1940, and states that he was born at Drammen, Norway on February 5, 1901, married June 12, 1926 to Lillian. She was born in Chicago on September 16, 1900. Their daughter Lois was born December 25, 1927. Their son Ronald was born June 16, 1929. Ralph arrived in the U.S. in September 1903 on the vessel "Stavanger Fjord". Ralph was living at 2539 Tripp Avenue and employed as a beer coil cleaner.

    Resident of Scotts Valley, California Ed passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 9th at home with his entire immediate family present. Ed was born and raised in Chicago, IL to Grace and Edward Gehrke, Sr. He attended Concordia High School in River Forest, IL. For three years during World War II, Ed served in the U.S. Army in both the European Theater and in the Philippines. He married Joan Kaden in 1955 and they raised their two sons, Glenn and Gary in Oakbrook, IL. Ed was a skilled autobody repairman his entire working life. He and his family enjoyed camping and the outdoors a great deal. Upon retirement in 1988, Ed and Joan moved to Santa Rosa, CA. They were active members of the Redwood Good Sam camping club for 13 years. In 2010, they moved to the beautiful retirement community of Montevalle in Scotts Valley, CA. Ed is survived by his wife Joan, his two sons Glenn and Gary and their families. A Celebration of Life for Ed will be held at 1:00 p.m. on March 22nd at the Mill community center in Montvalle, 552 Bean Creek Road, Scotts Valley, CA.
