Notes: OBITUARY OF Mrs. IDA MATHIDA FOGLE; Mrs. Ida Mathilda Fogle, nee Jahn, was born on October 14, 1880, in Crawford County, Iowa. to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Jahn. She was baptized by G. Haar, Lutheran Pastor, on April 25, 1881, and confirmed March 8th, 1894. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, by the Rev. C. Runge. On September 18th, 1900, she was united in marriage to George C. Fogle in Chicago. To this union one daughter, Augusta, was born. Mrs. Fogle lived in and near Charter Oak all her life with the exception of a few years spent in Chicago. Her husband preceded her in death by some 26 years and since his death she has made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Clausen, on a farm northeast of Charter Oak. Her daughter departed this life seven months ago. Mrs. Fogle has been in failing health about five years. She responded quite well to treatments for some time, but it soon became evident that she would never again be well. And she gradually grew weaker. Her condition became alarming some six weeks ago and she closed her eyes in death at 6:30 p. m. July 4th, at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 20 days She was a member of St. John's Ladies Aid Society and ever took an interest in her church. She received Christian burial on July 6th with a service at the Vernon Clausen home and the Lutheran Church. interment was made in St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak. Memorial wreaths are being given by relatives and friends for various charitable organizations in her perpetual memory. There remain to mourn her loss: her son-in-law, Vernon Clausen, and two grandchildren: Vernette (Mrs. Emil Bielfeldt) of Charter Oak, and Paul at home; three brothers: Charles Jahn, Ute, Otto Jahn, Denison, Ben Jahn,,Ute; and six sisters: Bertha (Mrs. Fred Mesenbrink), Windom,, Minn., Louise (Mrs. Carl Kutschinski) Charter Oak, Anna (Mrs. Ben Marten), Lena (Mrs. Albert Strissel), Denison, Minnie (Mrs. Emil Hopp), Charter Oak, and Mathilda (Mrs. Albert Rabe) Charter Oak; and one grandchild. Notes: Otto J. Jahn, son of Carl and Bertha (Krause) Jahn was born February 18, 1887 in Hanover Township, Crawford County near Charter Oak, Iowa. Lula (Plough) Jahn was the daughter of Henry and Ida (Christiansen) Plough. She came from a family of 12. Otto (1889-1969) and Lula Plough (1893- 1975) were married at Charter Oak Iowa, November 6, 1912. They farmed the home place until 1919. They lived in Mitchell, South Dakota, one year, then bought a farm near Stickney, South Dakota. In 1924, they lost it due to hail storms and the depression years, and corn at ten cents a bushel. They moved out to Presho, South Dakota to work in the hayfields and also to break up hayland into farms. Otto got a good job breaking county roads for Brule County, near Re- liance, South Dakota. Lula worked as a cook in the Donahue Restaurant. Finally they moved back to Denison, Iowa. Otto drove truck for Bos Truck Lines of Webster City, Iowa. Lula ran a private nursing home in her home from 1932-1956 at East Chestnut 3treet in Denison, Iowa. It was the first such nursing home in Crawford County and surrounding counties. Her first patient was William "Bill" Mead. She received $20.00 a month for food and care. Born to the union of Otto and Lula Jahn were three children. (1) Esther, 1914, married Emmett Leo Champion, October 7, 1933, at Denison, Iowa. To this union was born six sons, Robert, Edward, Richard, Martin, Phomas, and Emmett Jr., were born. 2)Erma, 1918, was married to Gordon Aldag, 1914. To this union was born Betty, Patricia, William, and Ronald. Erma and Gordon were married September 8, 1935. (3) Eileen, 1921, married Paul A. Peteas, 1915-1965, January l9, 1942. Notes: Emil Hopp was born in Crawford County in 1891. He was the son of Carl and Henritte (Whitkope) Hopp, who also were farmers in this area. Emil married Minnie Jahn on December 21, 1911. She was born in 1891, the daughter of Carl and Bertha (Krause) Jahn, who also were farmers. Emil and Minnie had four children: Raymond, born in 1913; Lorena "Lorraine", born in 1915; Clarence, born in 1916; and Alvern, born in 1927. Emil was a farmer most of his life and served four years as a mail carrier. The Hopps moved to Charter Oak and Emil retired in 1951. Emil died in 1963 and his wife, Minnie, entered Eventide Home for the Aged in Denison in 1967. She lived there until her death in 1981. Notes: A TRIBUTE TO MATTIE (JAHN) RABE Mattie Jahn was the daughter of Carl and Bertha (Krause) Jahn. She was born August 2, 1893, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Her father was born in Pomern, Germany, received his education and spent his youth in his homeland. He learned the trade of bricklayer before coming to the United States and to Chicago when a young man. Her mother was born in Berlin and also received her education in Germany. She and a sister left Germany and came to America, locating in Chicago where two of her sisters had already settled. She found employment there assisting with housework in various homes. After their marriage Carl and Bertha resided in Chicago. About 1884, they came to Crawford County and located on a farm in Hanover Township. They remained on this farm until they retired and came to Charter Oak to live until their passing. Mattie (Jahn) Rabe attended the rural school in Han- over Township, having to walk four miles each day to and from school. She also attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township and was confirmed there. Most of her youth was spent at the homes of her sisters, helping with the housework and taking care of the children. On March 14, 1913, she was married to Albert Rabe at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. They ; were the parents of five children: Martin (deceased), Ernest of Kansas City, Missouri; Adeline Woock of Sioux City, Iowa; Bernard of Highland, California; and [ Vernon of Sioux City. There are 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. After their marriage they lived on a farm, four miles east of Charter Oak, later moving to Charter Oak. After coming to town, Mattie worked in a restaurant as well as a store. She also assisted in caring for the aged and ill in their homes. During World War II, she served the Charter Oak exchange as night operator. She continued as the switchboard operator until Charter Oak changed its telephone system to dial. Her duty as a telephone operator, with an exchange of approximately 325 subscribers, was not only answering their calls, but tracing calls, calling officers, locating a doctor in an emergency, and notifying firemen of a fire. When time permitted, between raising her family and working, Mattie liked to indulge in her hobbies of crocheting, gardening, and working with flowers. Mattie (Jahn) Rabe was honored on her 86th birthday, with an Open House on August 26, 1979, at the Charter Oak Community Building. The event was hosted by her children, and was attended by numerous friends and relatives. Mattie resided at Eventide Lutheran Home for the Aged in Denison, Iowa, for a number of years before her death on February 1, 1986.
