The colony was established in 1605 by Pierre Dugua de Mons and his companions, including Samuel de Champlain. The colony was located on the north shore of the Annapolis Basin. In 1613, the colony was burned and sacked by troops from Virginia. The name Port-Royal survived, and in the 1630s, Acadian families from France settled and farmed the area. In 1692, Port-Royal was struck by a severe earthquake and a tidal wave. Two-thirds of the town disappeared underwater.
