7238	Semi- Truck Hits Cars' Truck, Tractor And Service Station: A 1964 White, Freight liner truck driven by Otho Middaugh of Council Bluffs collided with a 1957 Plymouth driven by Art Kutschinski of Charter Oak at 7:10 p m Tuesday night on highway 141 at the Northwest edge of Charter Oak. Kutschinski was making a left turn into Charter Oak and the eastbound semi was unable to avoid the car. The Takin Freight Lines semi of Waterloo then went out of control due to a damaged steering system, sliding and rolling into the Art Benningstorf Standard station. Both the Kutschinski car and the Takin Freight Lines tractor trailer were totally destroyed. Only the truck driver Otho Maddaugh was hospitalized with a fractured cervical vertebra and minor lacerations. He is listed in fair condition. The semi then struck a telephone booth and Edward Preul's 1940 Farmall (M) with booster buck that had just been parked few seconds before. The weight of the totally destroyed tractor is attributed with slowing the forward motion of the semi enough to avoid hitting the gas pumps of Art Benningstorf's Standard station. The semi then careened off Reynold Larson's 1950 Chevy and totally destroyed it. Next in line was Henry Meyer's 1951 Ford, which was also totally destroyed and Frank Overhue's 1957 Chevrolet pickup was also hit. As the semi rammed all these vehicles it also knocked down several utility poles and hit the southwest end of the Benningstorf station. Art Kutschinski was charged with failure to yield the right of way. Patrolman Robert Elliot of Harlan made the report and reported an estimated $30,000.00 damage was involved. In the past week and a half there have been 4 semi trucks, 1 straight truck, and 6 cars wrecked on highway 141 between Mapleton and Charter Oak. One person has died and a semi with different trailers was involved in two accidents. Kutschinski, son of Carl and Louisa Jahn Kutschinski, was born September 8, 1906 at Charter Oak and died March 3, 1969. He attended the rural and parochial schools. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the late Rev. A. A. Amstein, He worked as a farm hand on local farms in the Charter Oak area for several years. He serverd in the Armed Forces forces for three and one-half years during World War II. For many years he faithfully cared for his parents who preceded him in death. One brother, Ernest, preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Elmer and Alvin; three sisters, Erna, Mrs William Friedrichs, Olinda, Mrs William Schultz, Irene, Mrs Francis Lee; several other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held at ten-thirty a. m,. Friday, March 7, at St. John's Lutheran Church, the Rev. A. I. Prouty officiating. St. John's Women's Choir sang Asleep In Jesus and I'm But A Stranger Here, accompanied by Miss Irma Fiene, organist. Pallbearers were Paul Clausen, William Jeschke, Reynold Marten, Walter Jahn, Albert Petersen, Clarence Hopp. Homer Hall American Legion Post No. 66 conducted graveside services Interment was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
