Hans and Hans: Two Dworsky Men with the Same Sophia Nowcen?
Up until this point, the focus of this study has been predominantly fixed around the central axis of the Dworsky surname. However, in this case, it makes more sense to examine the lineage based upon one woman who married into the family: Sophia Nowcen. Curiously, she was registered as having married two men named Hans Dworsky. With no birth or death entries being found for her, there exists little information to solve this dilemma. Either she married both of them, or there were two identical couples with a Hans marrying a Sophia. Her surname had several revisions, one of which was Nowcz. That being the case, there were two people named Sophia Noffzen who died in 1792 and 1798, neither of which can be concretely linked to the following tree.
The first Hans Dworsky married Sophia Nowcen on 21 Apr 1749 in Lupow while living in Rambow. While he is assumed to be the first husband of Sophia, no information can clarify whether either of them had been married previously. They had three children who were born prior to Hans’ death on 30 Aug 1757 in Rambow.
- Johann Dworsky was born in 1750 in Rambow and was baptized on 14 Jun 1750 in Lupow. His godparents were: Lorentz von Kleist, Paul Dworsky, and Anna Dworsky. He died on 28 Jun 1750 in Rambow.
- Hans Gergen Dworsky was born in 1752 in Rambow and was baptized on 26 Apr 1752 in Lupow. His godparents were: Martin Tekke, Gergen Dworsky, and Paul. Louisa Caroline von Kleist. He died on 22 Oct 1780 in Wendisch Karstnitz (although it is possible he died in 1762 or survived to marry into the Farsbutter family). The reason for his attachment to this family with his death in 1780 is that his sister would have died the week earlier. However, the problem arises that there was a Fridrich Dwurske who had a child with a Catharina Dwurske, thus making it extraordinarily unlikely that the surviving Catharina married her brother. There are two Hans Gergens: one later known as Johann George with no defining clues lead to a definitive answer except that this Hans Gergen possibly died the same week as his sister, probably from disease, thus living in the same house. If this is the case, he would have been a Knecht.
- David Dworsky was born in 1755 in Rambow and was baptized on 16 Feb 1755 in Lupow. His Taufpate were: David Kruse, Christ. Brol?. Hedwig Legern. He, like his brother, was a Knecht. The meaning here is not quite clear whether he was a farmhand or a servant. He died on 16 Feb 1827 in Wendisch Karstnitz at the age of 72 years old from “Falkräftung.” David was buried on 20 Feb 1827 with his wife left in his inheritance. He married Dorothea Gottlieb Woldach on 31 Oct 1800 in Lupow while living in Rambow. (Also Dorothea Maria Waldowen/Dorothea Gottliebe Waldow.) Together, they had one known child:
- Anna Louise Dwurske was born on 16 Jul 1803 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 24 Jul 1803 in Lupow. She died on 18 Feb 1808 in Wendisch Karstnitz from a pox epidemic.
After Hans’ death, Sophia Nowcen married Hans Dworsky on 09 Nov 1758 in Lupow while living in Rambow. According to records, he should have been married to Anna Maria Zielken on 14 Nov 1746 in Lupow (the date was difficult to discern); he should have been living in Wendisch Karstnitz at the time. No further information could be found to help determine if the couple had any children. It is likely that she died before he married in 1758. It is possible, though, that he married her for status, as she could have been an older woman. One thing is for certain: this marriage differentiates the two Hans’ because of the overlap in childbearing years.
Hans was the Schulz before passing the duties onto his son, Jacob. He died on 17 Oct 1784 in Wendisch Karstnitz.
- Jacob Dawurske was born in 1760 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 03 Aug 1760 in Lupow . (His last name at birth was spelled “Dworsky.”) His godparents were: Martin Potratz, Michael Rzech, and — Dorthea Sophia von Kleist. He died on 26 Sep 1821 in Rambow from Stickfluß (bronchitis or asthma) and was buried on 30 Sep 1821. He married Dorothea Maria Zilzken on 24 Nov 1785 in Lupow while living in Wendisch Karstnitz. She was born about 1770 (her middle names were listed as: Maria, Elisabeth, or Louisa). She died from dysentery on 17 Sep 1835 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was buried on 20 Sep 1835 (as Dorothea Maria geb. Kalwash, died from Blutgange). The mention of the name Kalwash (or Kalwass, later spelled Kalfass) is interesting, as one of their offspring would marry into that family. Jacob took on his father’s role as the Schulz.Jacob Dawurske and Dorothea Maria Zilzken had the following children:
- Frantz Friedrich Dworschke was born on 20 Aug 1787 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized “12. d. 26.” He died on 28 Apr 1789 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was mentioned as a “Schaden.” He was buried on 03 May 1789
- Anna Christina Gottliebe Dworske was born on 18 Jun 1789 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 21 Jun 1789 in Lupow. (Known as Christina Gottlieb for first marriage, Anna Christina for the second). One of her godparents was Johann Georg Dworske. She died on 09 Sep 1832 in Wendisch Karstnitz at the age of 44 years and 2 months from Schlagfluß. She was buried on 12 Sep 1832 in Wendisch Karstnitz (auf dem Kirchhofe zu W. Carstenitz beerdigt). She left behind her widower, Martin Mitzlaff and her children August, Albertine, and Christian Carl. Her name was also known as “Dawurske.”Her first marriage was to Christian Friedrich George Kalfass, son of Michael Calfassen and Barbara Dorothea Krusen, on 27 Apr 1810 in Lupow while living in Wendisch Karstnitz. He was widowed and she was a Jungfrau. He was born in Apr 1772 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized in Lupow on 12 Apr 1772. He was born as “George Christian.” He died on 21 Jan 1818 in Wendisch Karstnitz at the age of 41 years old, leaving behind a widow and two children. He was buried on 25 Jan 1817. (Other spellings for his name include Calfass, Kolwas, and Koleras.)
- Johann Jacob Kalfass was born on 28 Feb 1811 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 03 Mar 1811 in Lupow. He died on 15 Apr 1811 in Wendisch Karstnitz.
- Christian Fridrich Heinrich Kalfass was born on 01 Sep 1812 in Wendisch Karstnitz in house #6 and was baptized on 06 Sep 1812 in Lupow. His godparents were: Jacob Remus, David Dwurske, and Cathar. - Caroline Charlotte Kalwass was born on 29 Nov 1849 (the spelling was standardized as “Kalvas” at her marriage) and was baptized on 08 Dec 1849 in Groß Dübsow. She married Johann Ferdinand Gustav Lemm, son of Christian Friedrich Lemm and Dorothea Marie Kautz, on 10 Dec 1875 in Reitz. They were living in Neu Warbelow at the time. He was born on 12 Jun 1847 in Pustamin in Kreis Schlawe.

- August Kalfas
Anna Christina Gottliebe was then married to the Tagelöhner, Martin Friedrich Mitzlaff, on 06 Nov 1818 in Lupow at the age of 28 years old while living in Wendisch Karstnitz). He was born about 1795.

Her Taufpate were: Cathrina Elisabeth Dewursken, Anna Louisa Ziltzken, and Martin Schwartz. She died on 25 Jan 1856 in Lupow and was buried on 28 Jan 1856.Two children were born out of wedlock with Johann Hübner. It is possible that they were twins. However, the entry in the church book for their confirmation denotes that the baptism record was not to be found in books.
- Carl August Hübner was illegitimately born on 11 Jan 1817 in Wendisch Karstnitz, was baptized on 12 Jan 1817 in Lupow, and was confirmed in Lupow in September 1830.
- Christian Friedrich Hübner can be found in the confirmation records for Lupow. No other information was found. She had one child born out of wedlock without a father being specified:

- Caroline Henriette Dawursken was born on 13 Mar 1823 in Wendisch Karstnitz. Her father was supposed to be the Knecht, Johann Wilke. (Unehelich. Vater soll sein: Johann Wilke, Knrecht). She died on 23 Apr 1823 in Wendisch Karstnitz from Krämpfen and was buried on 26 Apr 1823.She was then married to Carl Ludwig Bolduin, son of Johann Balduan and Eva Christina Nofzen, on 14 Apr 1826 in Lupow while living in Wendisch Karstnitz. - Louise Albertine Bolduan was born on 02 Aug 1828 in Wendisch Karstnitz with the note in the church book “Ist gestorben.”

- Auguste Albertine Thrun was born on 16 Aug 1854 in Sorkow.
- Friederike Henriette Wilhelmine Thrun was born in 1856 in Sorkow.
- Carl Ludwig Thrun was born on 19 May 1858 in Sorkow (Twins. First child.)
- August Wilhelm Thrun was born on 19 May 1858 in Sorkow (Twins. Second child.)
- Heinrich Friedrich Thrun was born on 03 May 1860 in Sorkow.
- Albert Hermann Thrun was born in 1863 in Sorkow.
- Theodor Ferdinand Thrun was born on 26 May 1866 in Sorkow.

It was registered in the Stojentin parish, noting that he left behind his widow, one son and one daughter of legal age, one minor son, and five minor daughters. He married Anna Dorothea Krampen on 18 Nov 1814 in Lupow while living in Wendisch Karstnitz. They were both previously unmarried, listed as “Jungfrau und Junggeselle.” She was born about 1783 (and was also listed as Anna Christina, Anna Regina). She died on 09 Jan 1826 in Rambow at the age of 43 years old from tuberculosis (Schwindsucht) and was buried on 13 Jan 1826, leaving behind the following in her Erbe: her widower Jacob Dawurske, Christian, Caroline, and Hanna. Strangely, Dorothea was not listed in this entry even though no death record was found for this time period. One of the children with the name Henriette should have married Heinrich Lenz and had Albert Johann Lenz in 1858 in Rexin. (Dewuske was also awkwardly spelled “Jawuske” — one child was listed under Dorothea Dewuske.)
-
- Christian Fridrich Dawurske was born on 29 Jul 1815 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 30 Jul 1815 in Lupow. Christian was confirmed in Lupow on 19 Sep 1830 with the following remarks: “Confirmirte am 15ten p. Trinitas.” At that time, he was mentioned as being from Wendisch Karstnitz. He became a Tagelöhner and Arbeitsmann, though he was an Einwohner in Rexin earlier. He should have been connected to Albert Dawurske on the basis that the Christian Dawurske who married Henriette Lawrenz listed the Kramp family as godparents in Rexin, which was Jacob’s place of death. Jacob left behind one major and one minor son. Loll’s database (from Stolp.de) entry listing Christian as born in 1825 must have been a mistake. All clues point to them being the same individual. His father was a Taglöhner and he was a Taufpate in Rexin in 1843. He should have died before 1880. He married Henriette Lawrenz. Her parents could have been Carl Lawrenz and Friedrike Birr, but that would have made her 18 at the time of her daughter Johanne’s birth, if that truly was the case. While possible, that scenario seems rather unlikely.
- Johanna Wilhelmine Dawurske was born on 19 Jul 1843 in Velsow and was baptized on 06 Aug 1843 in Lupow. (One of her Taufpate was Wilhelmine Krampe, likely her step-grandmother).
- Albert G. Dawurske was born on 10 Sep 1848 in Neu Damerow. (Possibly, his middle initial stood for Georg, as this was more common in his family than another name like “Gustav.”). He died on 16 Feb 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, He married Bertha Wodtke on 24 Mar 1873. She was born on 03 Dec 1854 in Germany and died on 18 Oct 1932 in Brillion, Calumet, Wisconsin.

He married Mathilde Louise Gartz, the illegitimate daughter of Karoline Ernestine Gartz, on 27 Dec 1880 in Sageritz while living in Neu Damerow. She was born on 20 Nov 1859 in Klein Podel, Stolp. She died on 02 Sep 1942 in Ramnitz (Standesamt Neu Damerow).

- Carl Ferdinand Dawurske was born on 21 Oct 1843 in Rexin and was baptized on 29 Oct 1843 in Stojentin. (Ausgaben Vater Johann Schnege.) He died in 1846 in Rexin. She would later marry Wilhelm Thrun and have the following children, as mentioned in her Erbe: Johanne Thrun, Albertine, August, Caroline, and Wilhelm.
- Johanne Henriette Thrun was born on 18 Nov 1848 in Poganitz and was baptized on 03 Dec 1848 in Lupow.

- – Thrun was a stillborn son born on 09 Jul 1855 in Poganitz. (Todtgeboren Sohn).
- Caroline Louise Thrun was born on 11 Dec 1856 in Poganitz was baptized on 26 Dec 1856 in Lupow.
- Wilhelm Thrun was born on 12 Mar 1859 in Poganitz and was baptized on 13 Mar 1859 in Lupow.
Her parents could have been Carl Lawrenz and Friedrike Birr, but that would have made her 18 at the time of her daughter Johanne’s birth, if that truly was the case. While possible, that scenario seems rather unlikely.
- Charlotte Wilhelmine Albertine Dawurske was born on 26 Jul 1821 in Rambow and was baptized on 05 Aug 1821 in Lupow. She died on 08 Aug 1822 in Rambow and was buried on 12 Aug 1822.
- Hanna Henriette Dawurske was born on 06 Jan 1824 in Rambow and was baptized on 11 Jan 1824 in Lupow. She died on 13 Mar 1826 in Rambow and was burid on 16 Mar 1826 (died as Caroline Henriette in the church book). After his first wife’s death, he Married Wilhelmine Friedrike Kramp, the daughter of Michael Kramp, on 17 Nov 1826 in Lupow while living in Rambow. She was born about 1802 as the youngest daughter. She was likely Anna Dorothea’s sister, though this is currently speculation. Together, they had several children, some who might not have been present in the church book:
- Louise Henriette Dawurske was born on 02 Mar 1827 in Rambow was baptized on 11 Mar 1827 in Lupow (spelled “Dawarske” on baptismal record).
- Dorothea Henriette Dawurske was born on 27 Apr 1828 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 04 May 1828 in Lupow. She was a Taufpate in Rexin in 1853 and three times in Stojentin in 1855 and once in 1857. (There was also a Dorothee as a Taufpate in Rexin in 1851.) She was married to Heinrich Lenz, most likely in Stojentin, and had the following children:
- Albert Johann Lenz was born in 1858 in Rexin and was baptized in Stojentin (entry 1858/25).
- Johanna Wilhelmine Bertha Lenz was born in 1861 in Neitzkow and was baptized in Stojentin (entry 1861/143).
- Ferdinand Carl Lenz was born in 1864 in Neitzkow and was baptized in Stojentin (entry 1864/15).
- – Lenz was born in 1866 in Neitzkow. No other information about this daughter has been provided. She was registered to Stojentin (entry 1866/38).
- Wilhelmine Friedrike Dawurske was born on 23 Aug 1831 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 04 Sep 1831 in Lupow. She died on 08 Apr 1832 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was buried on 11 Apr 1832 in the Kirchhof. A Schwichtenberg was one of her Taufpate.
- Charlotte Katharine Dawurske was born on 26 Jan 1833 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 03 Feb 1833 in Lupow. Some of her godparents were: Katharina Bolduin geb. Dawurske and Kalwass. She was a Taufpate in Rexin in 1850. She was married to Friedrich Leppert and had these children:
- Johanne Auguste Leppert was born in 1864 in Sorchow and was baptized in Groß Garde (entry 1864/21).
- Friedrich Gottlieb Albert Leppert was born in 1865 in Sorchow and was baptized in Groß Garde (entry 1865/199).
- Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Dawurske was born on 22 Aug 1835 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 30 Aug 1835 in Lupow with a Bolduan listed as one of his godparents. (He is assumed to be the Wilhelm who married Johanna in Groß Gluschen.) He lived in Groß Gluschen in 1859 and 1866. He married Johanna Mueller. She was born about 1834 (city directories list her as Hannah married to William. Her middle initial was mentioned to be “A.” Most census records indicate her birth in 1834. However, the 1892 census shows her birth year as 1831. They immigrated to Rochester, Monroe, New York, arriving in the United States with five children on 01 Apr 1881.
- Bertha Emilie Dewuske was born on 05 Feb 1841 in Rexin and was baptized on 14 Feb 1841 in Stojentin. She had one known child with Ferdinand Haak:
- Ida Wilhelmine Haak was born in 1863 in Czierwienz.
- Emilie Auguste Therese Dewuske was born on 04 Jul 1847 in Rexin and was baptized on 11 Jul 1847 in Stojentin. She died in 1850 in Rexin.
-
- Michael Ludwig Dwurske was born on 17 Sep 1796 in Wendisch Karstnitz in house #12 and was baptized on 25 Sep 1796 in Lupow. He died on 13 Oct 1796 in Wendisch Karstnitz.
- Georg Friedrich Dawurske was born on 21 Mar 1799 in Wendisch Karstnitz and was baptized on 31 Mar 1802 in Lupow. (Listed as “Carstenitz.” Born “Dwurske” to house #12. His wife’s death lists him as “Dewurska.”). He served with the Garde, and was later employed as a Victualienhändler, Kl. Schankwirth, and an Arbeitsmann. He died from Sauferwahnsinn, or alcoholism, on 10 Nov 1851 in Berlin, Germany, as evidenced by the entry in the Evangelische Charitékirche Berlin’s church book. He was married to Louise Friederike Gericke, (also spelled “Luise”) daughter of Friedrich Gericke and Magdalena Witten, on 25 Oct 1833 in Berlin at Sankt Georgenkirche. They would divorce before 02 Nov 1851. She was born on 12 Jul 1808 in Fürstenberg, Brandenburg, Germany and was baptized on 24 Jul 1808 (born “Luisa Friederica Gericke”). She died on 20 Feb 1853 in Berlin and was buried on the 24th. It would be listed that she had six children at the time of her death at age 44. She died of a lung ailment, most likely tuberculosis (Lungen, Schwindsucht). Her daughter’s death certificate lists the mother as a “Schubert.” It’s unknown whether she was married previously. However, after the divorce, she married the Zimmergesellen (journeyman carpenter) Johann August Carl Zeh, who was born around 1807, son of the already dead Eigenthümer, Johann Gottfried Zeh. Her permission to marry was granted on 23 May 1851, and they would be wed on 02 Nov 1851 by Pastor Sydow. (This is probably why the daughter’s death record lists a “Karl Dawuske” as her father; it would be a combination of the birth father and step-father’s names.) They may have had Herrmann Wilhelm Zeh, who was illegitimately born on 28 Feb 1851 who was baptized on 23 Nov 1851 in Berlin. This surname would later show up in another Dawurske family member’s tree in New York. Altogether, these are the children from Georg Friedrich, according to death certificates and other evidence. Only two are known by name:
- Louise Friederike Auguste Dawurske was born on 18 Jul 1841 in Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany (St. Georgen-Kirche. The oldest daughter, also spelled “Dawuski”). She died on 03 Feb 1885 in Berlin to the Berlin XI Standesamt Register. She married Ferdinand August Hermann Müller, son of Friedrich Ferdinand Müller, on 01 May 1870 in Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany at Sophien-Kirche. He was his father’s second son, born about 1846, employed as a Gerbergeselle, a tanner, following his father’s profession listed in the marriage certificate.. He died in 1905. Together, they had the following children:
- Julius Hermann Georg Müller was born on 01 Mar 1872 in Berlin and was baptized on 14 Apr 1872 in Sophien-Kirche. He married Martha Rödling.
- – Müller was born stillborn on 16 Aug 1873 in Berlin as registered in St. Georgen-Kirche. He died on 16 Aug 1873 in Berlin (Todtgeboren) and was buried on 19 Aug 1873.

- Therese Wilhelmine Charlotte Dewurske was born on 03 Oct 1843 in Berlin and was baptized on 08 Oct 1843 in St. Georgen-Kirche. She died on 13 Jun 1863 in Berlin and was buried on 16 Jun 1863 to the Kirchhof Sophia 74L. (St. Elisabeth-Kirche. Lists her as the daughter of the dead Zimmermann Karl Dawurskÿ. The age at death is 21 Jahre, 8 Monate, 10 Tage, however, this must be incorrect unless another relative were to exist in the same book under the same name. It’s possible the math was wrong.)
